Ferrari triumph in Australia

At 03:00 GMT this morning the 2000 F1 season kicked off in some style with many of the favourites to impress dropping by the roadside. Most notably both the McLarens failed within laps of each other, prey to problems with the new Mercedes-Ilmor engine. This left the track wide open to Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello to produce a Ferrari 1-2, with Ralf Schumacher to collect a third place, a duplicate of his 1999 race. The first points of the season for Sauber for Salo's 6th place was rudely taken away by the FIA as Salo was disqualified for an over-size front wing.

Button becomes UKs youngest driver

The aptly named Jenson Button has been chosen as BMW Williams' new driver to replace Italian Alex Zanardi in the coming season. 20 year old Button will be the youngest ever British Grand Prix driver, and the fifth youngest ever. Only three years ago he was in karting and failed his driving test. For the last two seasons he has been climbing the racing ladder, last season driving in the British F3 championship.
Williams have been looking for a replacement for a couple of months and had to make a decision between test driver Bruno Junqueira and rookie Jenson Button, and following a good test session at Barcelona last week Button was given the job to partner Ralph Schumacher.
When asked, Button said he was amazed and delighted to be in Formula One and Frank Williams described him as a talent for the future. Some critics, including Stirling Moss, have warned Button of expecting too much too early and fear he may blow his only chance of making it big in the Championship.

BAR scrap controversial livery

British American Racing is set to scrap its controversial livery next year. According to insiders, BAR is planning to focus on just one of the two tobacco brands that it promoted in 1999.
It is thought it will lead with Lucky Strike colours with 555 having small logos on the engine cover and drivers' overalls. The move comes after BAR fell foul of the FIA's rules which demand that each team races its cars in liveries that are "substantially the same".
It had planned to use the same paintscheme on both cars, but for each to carry different brand identification.
